Hunter Greene takes over as best MLB starting pitcher
Schwellenbach takes a fall after a rough outing.
It’s early in the season, so every start has a big impact on the ratings. Spencer Schwellenbach led our ratings after the first two weeks of the season, but a rough start against Toronto in which he allowed six runs caused his Composite Rating to drop from a league best 99 to a still impressive 87. Let’s look at the top pitchers after week three.
1) Hunter Greene (CIN) 99-98-99
After three games to start the season in which he faced the San Francisco Giants twice and the Texas Rangers once, Greene had a bit of a breather when he pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He didn’t let up though. Greene allowed just two hits, no runs and one walk as he struck out eight. The win, along with Schwellenbach’s disaster in Toronto, moved Greene from second to first in the ratings.
2) Yoshinobu Yamamoto (LAD) 96-98-98
Yamamoto had his third start of the month on Friday and didn’t allow a run in seven innings at Texas. He has now started three games in April covering 19 innings and has yet to allow an earned run. He has allowed just one unearned run in that span. His ERA sits at 0.93 on the season.
3) Chris Bassitt (TOR) 97-96-97
Although he has yet to finish seven innings in any of his four starts, he has not allowed more than one run in any start. He has allowed one run in two of his starts and none in his other two starts. The lack of length in his starts hurts his rating, but he is more than making up for that with the quality of those starts.
4) Nick Pivetta (SD) 96-96-97
Pivetta’s second start of the season against the Chicago Cubs was a big improvement of his first. This time he was at home. He allowed just four hits and one run in six innings.
5) Garrett Crochet (BOS) 94-97-96
Crochet’s numbers were help by an outing against the Chicago White Sox. He allowed just one hit in 7 1/3 innings.
6) Drew Rasmussen (TB) 98-93-96
7) Tyler Mahle (TEX) 95-95-95
8) Logan Gilbert (SEA) 92-97-94
9) Andrew Heaney (PIT) 97-92-94
10) Freddy Peralta (MIL) 93-95-93
Top Rotations
1) Cincinnati - Top start Hunter Greene leads the best rotation in baseball.
2) Texas - Tyler Mahle (95 CR) is the biggest reason for the Rangers to be in this spot.
3) Toronto - Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman lead the way.
3) Tampa Bay - Drew Rasmussen and Shane Baz. Yep.
5) Philadelphia - Last week’s top team drops to fifth but is still looking strong with Zack Wheeler, Jesus Luzardo and Cristopher Sanchez leading the way.
